On this date in 1982, The March Violets released their first single, "Religious As Hell". It was actually a four-track 7 inch EP that also included "Fodder", "Children On Stun" and "Bon Bon Babies". All but the last track also appeared on their compilation album, Natural History. The Leeds, England goth band released several singles but no real albums by the time they disbanded in 1987. They have reformed since to perform.

On this date in 1982, Surf Punks released their third album, Locals Only. There were no singles released from the album. The band was from Malibu, California and was formed by Dennis Dragon (brother of "The Captain" of Captain & Tenille fame) and Drew Steele (son of Gavin MacLeod of Love Boat fame). They appeared in the movie, Urgh! A Music War, performing "My Beach" from their second album. They disbanded in 1988.

Roky Erickson had formerly been with 1960's band 13th Floor Elevators. This band was geared towards horror punk. The Austin, Texas native collaborated often with Texas punk band The Nervebreakers. The band consisted of Jonathan Richman, Jerry Harrison (future talking Heads), David Robinson (future The Cars) and Ernie Brooks. It contained the single, "Roadrunner" which reached the #5 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The album was actually released after this lineup had disbanded. The Boston, Massachusetts proto-punk band, later known as Jonathan Richman no longer exists but Jonathan Richman is still performing.

In July of 1973, New York Dolls released their self-titled debut album. It produced the singles, "Trash", "Personality Crisis", "Jet Boy" and "Looking For A Kiss". The New York City glam/proto punk band released two albums before disbanding in 1976. David Johansen went solo and performed as Buster Poindexter for awhile. Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan went on to form The Heartbreakers. Arthur Kane and Sylvain Sylvain were involved in various projects. In 2004, the three surviving members, David, Arthur and Sylvain, re-formed the band. Arthur Kane has since passed away but the other two continue on leading the revamped lineup.

The Leeds, England post punk band originally started out as a three piece, all girl band, but they went through numerous lineup changes that were not limited to the female gender. Due to the changes in lineup and the weak album sales, the band called it quits by the time 1981 ended with five singles and one album to their credit. This lineup included Jackie Callis, sister of Jo Callis (of The Rezillos and The Human League).

On this date in 1980, Chelsea released their seventh single, "No Escape". It was backed by "Decide". Both tracks appeared on their second album, Alternative Hits, which was primarily a "catch up" album. The B side also appeared on their self-titled debut album. Both tracks also appeared on their U.S. album debut, No Escape. The London punk band was one of the earliest punk bands on the scene but went through some dramatic personnel changes early on that set their recordings back. The original lineup featured Gene October as the lead singer and three bandmates who would leave in a couple of weeks after forming to form another band. Those departing were Billy Idol, Tony James and John Towe. That band would be Generation X. Gene October was left to recruit a new band which he did. That new band included James Stevenson. Predictably, he would later leave to join Generation X too. Chelsea is still performing and Gene October is still there.

The single reached the #11 spot on the U.S. singles chart but only peaked at #95 in the U.K. The Bath, England new wave band broke up in 1984 after two albums. The band toured again in 2008 but without one half of the founding duo. Rob Fisher died of complications following stomach surgery in 1999.

On this date in 1981, R.E.M. released their debut single, "Radio Free Europe". It was backed by "Sitting Still". Both songs appeared on their album debut, Murmur, in 1983, but "Radio Free Europe" was a re-recorded version. The single did not chart the first time around but reached the #78 spot in the U.S. when re-released in 1983. The Athens, Georgia power pop band became a huge mainstream rock act in the mid-80's. They are still active.

On this date in 1979, Sex Pistols (or the owners of their name) released an album called Some Product: Carri On Sex Pistols. No new music. No songs at all. It was an album filled with interviews and radio ads. Despite there being nothing to release as a single, the album reached the #6 spot on the U.K. albums chart. Of course, the band had really broken up in January of 1978 when Johnny Rotten left the band but there was still blood to be squeezed out of the name.

On this date in 1978, Spherical Objects released their debut album, Past And Parcel. There were no singles released from the album. The Manchester, England post-punk/experimental disbanded in 1981 after releasing four albums and evidently left the music business. The only news of its band members since the break up is that lead singer Steve Solamar had a gender change operation. He now answers to the name Shirley.

On this date in 1978, Snakefinger released his debut single, "The Spot". It was backed by "Smelly Tongues". Neither track appeared on his debut album, Chewing Hides The Sound. Snakefinger was actually London post punk musician Philip Charles Lithman. Under the name Snakefinger, he released five studio albums before dying of a heart attack on July 1, 1987. His close association with The Residents were a major influence on them and vice versa. He played for years with them live and contributed in the studio. As a matter of fact, The Residents produced this single.

The A side appeared on their self-titled debut album while the other two tracks did not (though they were added as bonuses when the album was released on CD). The single peaked at the #84 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The London punk/power pop band recorded four albums as The Boys plus one under their holiday alter-ego, The Yobs, before disbanding in 1982. They were not newcomers to the scene as Matt Dangerfield and Casino Steel were both with London SS along with Mick Jones (The Clash), Tony James (Generation X) and Brian James(The Damned) before forming The Boys. The Boys have been performing live again.

On this date in 1977, The Killjoys released their debut single, "Johnny Won't Get To Heaven". It was backed by "Naive". The band was fronted by ex-Lucy and The Lovers' guitarist Kevin Rowland, who would be better known in the future as the frontman for Dexy's Midnight Runners. The Killjoys, however, were nothing like Dexy's Midnight Runners at all. This was pure punk. The Birmingham, England punk band released just one single and they broke up before releasing an album.

It contained five tracks, "Simple Love", "(Don't Send Me) Roses", "Miss Wonderful", "On The Waterfront" and "Call It Mine". The Brisbane, Australia punk/post punk band has continued on despite the fact that Chris Bailey is the only original member left and has been since 1979. Guitarist Ed Kuepper left to form Laughing Clowns in 1979 but has done shows with The Saints in the last few years.

The first two albums were the only albums by the Sheffield, England new wave band that were recorded as a four piece band that included Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh. Those two would leave to form Heaven 17 and the remaining members of The Human League recruited four new members to form a six piece band. Both groups would find success. The London post punk band was formed by Barry Andrews (ex-XTC) and Dave Allen (ex-Gang Of Four). The band is still releasing music. On this date in 1980, The Nips released their one and only album, Only The End Of The Beginning. It was a live album released a few months after they broke up. It contained live versions of all four of their singles, "King Of The Bop", "All The Time In The World", "Gabrielle" and "Happy Song". They had been called The Nipple Erectors but radio wouldn't touch the name so they shortened it. The London punk band was led by Shane McGowan (later, of The Pogues) though he was known as Shane O'Hooligan at the time. They have played some reunion gigs recently.

On this single, former singer and present guitarist Dez Cadena and new vocalist Henry Rollins (ex-S.O.A.) handled the vocals. They disbanded in 1986.

The Birmingham, England post punk band rose from the ashes of The Prefects, a punk band that included original Nightingales members Robert Lloyd, Paul Apperley, Eamonn Duffy and Joe Crow. Nightingales disbanded in 1986 after three albums and numerous lineup changes. They have reunited and released new material since.

The single reached the #3 spot on the U.K. singles chart. FYI - There was no "Reasons To Be Cheerful", parts 1 or 2. The London punk/post-punk band was fronted by Ian Dury. They disbanded in 1981. The B side did not but it was added as a bonus when it was re-released on CD. The single reached the #9 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The Essex, U.K. power-pop/proto punk band disbanded in 1981. Bassist Paul Gray left before the end to play in The Damned. The band re-formed a few times since and has been playing live recently.
