On this date in 1979, Kirsty MacColl released her debut solo single, "They Don't Know". It was backed by "Motor On". Neither track appeared on her debut album, Desperate Character. The A side was later covered by Tracey Ullman with greater chart success (#2 U.K., #8 U.S.). She had previously been recorded as a member of London punk/powerpop band, the Drug Addix, where she was known as Mandy Doubt. Later, she became a member of The Pogues. The former Stiff Records recording artist from Croydon, England recorded on and off after 1983. She died in a boating accident on December 18, 2000.
