The Beat - Tears Of A Clown

On this date in 1979, The Beat (or English Beat as they were known in the U.S.) released their debut single, "Tears Of A Clown". The B side was "Ranking Full Stop". Neither track initially appeared on an album but both were added to their debut, I Just Can't Stop It, on a subsequent release. The single reached the #6 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The Birmingham, England ska band broke up in 1983 after three albums. Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger formed General Public. Andy Cox and David Steele formed Fine Young Cannibals. They were, of course, known as The English Beat in the U.S.
