On this date in 1978, Public Image Ltd released their debut single, "Public Image". It was backed by "The Cowboy". The A side appeared on their debut album, First Issue. The B side was a non-LP track. The single reached the #9 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The London post-punk band, fronted by John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) formerly of Sex Pistols, lasted until 1993.
