On this date in 1977, The Boomtown Rats released their debut single, "Lookin' After No. 1". It was backed by "Born To Burn" and a live track called "Barefootin'". The A side appeared on their self-titled debut album. The live track was added to the album as a bonus track when re-released on CD. "Born To Burn" was excluded from both. The single reached the #11 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The Dublin, Ireland punk/new wave band disbanded in 1986 after six albums.

LOOKIN' AFTER NO. 1 might have been one half a great friendly Dublin rivalry between the Rats and the Radiators had this single come out at the same time as TELEVISION SCREEN (April '77)... but as it happened, the Rats had already decamped to England, and although the Radiators reaped a momentary cult following in Dublin, the stabbing incident at their gig in UCD pretty much closed all doors to them in Ireland and they were also forced onto the ferry. Had both bands remained in Ireland continuing their work of following the Horslips model and opening up a circuit for original music around Ireland, there may have been a bigger melting pot of interesting bands here who graduated past embryonic stage. LOOKIN AFTER NO.1 is another example of how overlooked the Boomtown Rats early years are now, mainly because of Geldof's public profile elsewhere....
Now it seems Garry Roberts and Simon Crowe are doing the punk nostalga circuit as the Boomtown Rats!!! They just played Rebellion 2008 in Blackpool- Some people have no shame... and with Crowe involved, I doubt Geldof will be tempted any time soon!!!!
