On this date in 1980, Surf Punks released their debut album, My Beach. There were no singles released from the album. The band was from Malibu, California and was formed by Dennis Dragon (brother of "The Captain" of Captain & Tenille fame) and Drew Steele (son of Gavin MacLeod of Love Boat fame). They appeared in the movie, Urgh! A Music War, performing "My Beach" from their second album. They disbanded in 1988.

My Beach! My Wave! My Surf! My Sand! Go home!!!!
Love the Surf Punks, which makes no sense as I first heard them in High School in the suburbs of Chicago. Dr Demento played the Lifeguard track on his show. Time Magazine ran a short blurb on them as part of the new dangerous punk side of surf music. The joke was literally on them. I think my best friend and I latched on to them as part of an escape trip from Suburban Illinois. They were weirdos from California with skateboard wheels on guitars, which was about the farthest from the Midwest we would see. In my adult life I've since been surfing a handful of times but I'm still not a surfer. It's strange that we found that record in our outpost in the early 80's. Maybe not so strange since they were on Epic records after all. Hell, I might have actually got my copy from the Columbia Record House Club. About 10 years ago I bought a pressing of this record from from before they were on a major label. It's missing one of the songs and the cover is a three color (I think) print job with just the logo and splatter graphics. I picked it up at a yard sale in Chicago of all places.
I asked a guy I know in a surfing SoCal punk band that is decidedly a more gritty "punk" if he ever surfed with or knew the Surf Punks, and he said they were a good joke that was taken way too far. Not far enough for me. I've purchase the first four LP's both on vinyl and CD, plus the fifth EP on CD, plus that vinyl copy of the self pressed first album. I have a bit of obsessive compulsive disorder. Their releases have been going steadily downhill after Locals Only, but I'd still open my wallet if they put a new one out.
On a side note, I've been enjoying the the P5 for a couple months now, and I see that "Speak up!" call to action all the time (daily!) but have never been able to think of something to say besides "Those guys rule, thanks for posting that." This site has turned me on to a lot that I had always read about or seen, but never heard, and bands whose songs I own only on compilations but have never been able to track down full releases (The Yachts, for example have eluded my wallet for years) - So thanks for all that you do!
Kilwag,
I have this one on vinyl as well. Actually, I have a lot of the p5 stuff on vinyl.
Thanks for finally "speaking up". And, thanks to all of those bloggers who post this great music online. We just point you all in the right direction.
Ditto!
Thanks for sharing, Kilwag, and I hope you continue to enjoy our site!
