Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - The Message

On this date in 1982, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five released their fourth single (under various names), "The Message". It was backed by an instrumental version of the song. Both songs appeared on their debut album, The Message. This was one of the early hip-hop songs whose popularity crossed over into the new wave/post punk clubs. It was one of the first songs of this genre to take on social issues. Hip hop was considered solely party music at the time and this song probably changed hip hop forever. The song reached the #4 spot on the U.S. singles chart.
